Over 100 Thomasville City Schools Orchestra, 6th-12th grade, and 6th grade Music Appreciation students attended a concert of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra on Friday, October 25th. At the concert, students learned the basics of conducting loud and soft dynamics and heard the music of Mozart, Barber, and Beethoven. The world renowned violinist, Elena Urioste, played Barber Violin Concert, Op. 14 and after the performance answered questions from students throughout the audience. One of the most delightful and engaging parts of the event was the "woodwind wars," featuring Valdosta State University students playing flute, clarinet, oboe, and bassoon. They competed to see which instrument could play the lowest, highest, loudest, softest, and longest. The students attending were amazed that the young performers could sustain their breath at incredible lengths. The clarinet came out as the favorite of the students, their supporting vote demonstrated by applause.
